Since the beginning of maritime navigation the anchor is probably the most important piece of ship's equipment. Stone, wood, lead, and finally iron, it has undergone many modifications and improvements to facilitate its optimum efficiency. Otherwise known as 'Ground tackle" the anchor with it's associated winches and chain has evolved to what it is today; that is, to hold well on any type of sea bed, break free when intended and be hauled up on deck efficiently.
The anchor has been the subject of much discussion and reflections relating to its ideal form, the correct weight appropriate to the vessel's size and different methods of anchoring...
Yet, few works deal with its history and its evolution in times past. Owing to the complexity of the subject, typology of anchors does not exist. In archaeological reports that study wrecks and cargoes, they are often disregarded.
Our association MAP had the opportunity to discover on the underwater archaeological site of Trapani's harbour, Sicily, over forty anchors of all types and all periods. Facing the difficulty of finding sources of information and comparison, we had to create our own categories and venture into interpretations and assumptions. Those difficulties prompted us to design a website that could gather detailed information on anchors, hoping that it could help researchers in this field.
The Mediterranean Anchors project therefore aims to create a network to bring together experts, historians, archaeologists and inventors, enabling them to share their knowledge on Mediterranean Anchors. To this objective, all contributions of interesting information will be welcome.

Facebook unrolled three new features that give users greater control over how their data is used and shared,a tech-focused think tank, which means the social networking giant may finally be learning from its past privacy gaffes. The changes include a simplified Groups feature that lets you easily share data such as photos or Wall posts with select friends. Also, soon you will be able to download nearly all your Facebook data including wall posts, photos,Oklahoma City, videos, notes, events, e-mail, and your friends list into a simple compressed HTML file. Lastly, Facebook has created a new applications dashboard so you can see how often third-party applications are accessing your Facebook data and what types of data they can access. Facebook Privacy Fixes: Your Guide to the Newest ChangesFacebook Bible: Everything You Need to Know About Facebook Even more surprising than Facebook's changes is that, at least so far, the new features are getting positive early reviews from privacy watchdogs and advocacy groups. The Center for Democracy and Technology called Facebook's new features "a huge win for consumers and the company alike" and said "Facebook has positioned itself as a privacy innovator." Will privacy critics still have Facebook to kick around in the future or has the company finally figured out user privacy? Let's take a look. Groups Facebook is phasing out its old invitation-based Groups feature in favor of a simplified service that lets you set up a private group among your Facebook friends. Under the new service, all you have to do is choose to start a new Group from the left column, sac guess pas cher, type in your friends' names you want to add to the group, save the changes and you're done. Facebook's new Groups are private by default so that only the people you selected to be in the group can see the group's wall posts and other data. The group name and member list, however, will be public. The new feature also adds multiuser Facebook Chat so that all your group members can participate in an online discussion at once. The Groups feature also includes an e-mail address that lets group members send Wall posts via regular e-mail, and your groups can also collaborate on a text document. Facebook's old Groups feature will be discontinued, according to Facebook, but your existing Groups will not be deleted. 160; It's not clear whether old Groups will get the new Groups format. Overall, Groups sounds like a great feature, but there are a few qualms with the new service. In typical Facebook fashion, the new Groups feature is opt-out not opt-in so others can automatically add you to a group. Although this may not be a big deal for most people, it's easy to imagine situations where the new Groups feature could prove to be embarrassing. One obvious situation would be if a friend adds you to a group with a conservative or liberal political focus that you might not want co-workers or family members to see. You will be able to opt out of these groups if you want, and once you do you cannot be re-invited to that group unless you explicitly authorize it.Page 2
The Electronic Frontier Foundation also had a great suggestion for Facebook's new Groups feature: anonymous groups where users can join without revealing their true identity. That may be contrary to Facebook's concept of making life as transparent as possible, but imagine the power of being able to attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting or similar support group via Facebook using multiuser chat. Now that's a powerful social interaction. Download your data You will now be able to download almost all of your Facebook data as a ZIP file with just a few clicks. There are many potential uses for this feature. If you want to leave Facebook you can take your Wall posts and other data with you, or maybe you just want to save a copy of all your Facebook photos onto your desktop. Once the ZIP file is downloaded just double-click to decompress the file, and you'll have a structured HTML folder you can use to view your content in your Web browser. I haven't tried it out yet, so I am not sure how well the file will work. But if it's a basic HTML folder, monster beats, it should be a fairly straightforward process to navigate through the folder and subfolders to pull out different data types such as photos, air force one, videos and notes. The one thing you won't be able to take with you is the contact information for your friends such as e-mails and phone numbers, according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation. That may be disappointing to some, but it's hard to fault Facebook for erring on the side of too much privacy rather than too little. Apps Dashboard Want to know how often Zynga's Farmville or Yelp is asking for your Facebook data? Facebook's new apps dashboard will let you see what all those apps are up to, including how often they are accessing your profile and which pieces of information they can access. You will also be able to revoke the application and limit an app's ability to contact you right from the new dashboard. The new feature will be available under Accountgt;Privacy Settings and then click "Edit your settings" under Applications and Websites at the bottom of the Facebook privacy page. Missing from the new dashboard is the ability to revoke access to specific pieces of data an application wants to use. Let's face it, a Facebook game may want to access my Facebook videos or notes, but does it need that information to help me become a mob boss or super farmer? Of course not.Page 3
The Electronic Frontier Foundation likes the new control apps dashboard, but says Facebook should allow you to see how often applications that your friends have authorized are accessing your data. Third-party applications that your Facebook friends add to their profiles also have access to your Facebook data. To control the information your friends can share about you click on Accountgt;Privacy Settings then click on "Edit your settings" under Applications and Websites. On the next page,john_coxnww.com Blog RSS feed, click on the "Edit settings" button in the section titled "Info accessible through your friends." Facebook's new features are a step in the right direction in terms of privacy, but it remains to be seen whether Facebook will continue to respect user privacy the next time it introduces new features. But if the social networking giant keeps its focus on allowing users to control how their data is shared and export their data whenever they like, then Facebook just might regain some of that lost user trust. Facebook's new features are rolling out now, but it may take a few days before you see them in your account. Doug Cutting , the creator of the open-source Hadoop framework that allows enterprises to store and analyze petabytes of unstructured data, led the team that built one of the world's largest Hadoop clusters while he was at Yahoo. The former engineer at Excite, Apple and Xerox PARC is also the developer of Lucene and Nutch, two open-source search engine technologies now being managed by the Apache Foundation. Cutting is now an architect at Cloudera, which sells and supports a commercial version of Hadoop and which this week will host the Hadoop World conference in New York. In an interview, air force one, Cutting talked about the reasons for the surging enterprise interest in Hadoop.
How would you describe Hadoop to a CIO or a CFO? Why should enterprises care? At a really simple level it lets you affordably save and process vastly more data than you could before. With more data and the ability to process it, companies can see more, they can learn more, they can do more. [With Hadoop] you can start to do all sorts of analyses that just weren't practical before. You can start to look at patterns over years, over seasons, across demographics. You have enough data to fill in patterns and make predictions and decide, 'How should we price things?' and 'What should we be selling now?' and 'How should we advertise?' It is not only about having data for longer periods but also richer data about any given period, as well.
What are Hive and Pig? Why should enterprises know about these projects? Hive gives you [a way] to query data that is stored in Hadoop. A lot of people are used to using SQL and so, for some applications, monster beats, it's a very useful tool. Pig is a different language. It is not SQL. It is an imperative data flow language. It is an alternate way to do higher level programming of Hadoop clusters. There is also HBase, if you want to have real time [analysis] as opposed to batch. There is a whole ecosystem of projects that have grown up around Hadoop and that are continuing to grow. Hadoop is the kernel of a distributed operating system and all the other components around the kernel are now arriving on the stage. Pig and Hive are good examples of those kinds of things. Nobody we know of uses just Hadoop. They use several of these other tools on top as well.

As most sourcing professionals would agree, Oracle (ORCL) is one tough vendor. From its organizational complexity, to the challenge of finding good negotiation leverage, this growing technology giant can be one of the most challenging to work with. A recent survey of 20 different Oracle customer organizations within Forrester's Sourcing and Vendor Management (SVM) Leadership Council found that across the board, the primary point of contention was Oracle's lack of flexibility on price model evolution, volume/scope changes, ultimately, and overall business transparency (such as pricing). Council members also expressed that from their perspective, Oracle constantly tries to upsell and increase their costs. But let's face it mdash; you can't avoid Oracle. The same survey also found that while many member organizations claim they would prefer not to do business with Oracle, it's broad portfolio and frequent acquisitions make it nearly impossible to totally remove from your sourcing strategy. In the words of one council member, it's "very difficult to get rid of them!" You're up against some of the most able, highly trained, monster beat, and well motivated sales reps on the planet, but by understanding how Oracle works, you can increase your chances of reducing costs and improving terms and conditions. Drawing on existing research, Oracle's Annual report, current news items,Indianapolis, and feedback from its SVM Council Members, north face dame, Forrester offers the following recommendations for sourcing managers looking to achieve better results from Oracle negotiations. 1. Prepare for Oracles Central Approval Process Oracle has highly centralized approval processes, so it is insufficient merely to convince your rep to give you the deal you want mdash; you also have to help him convince the decision-makers in Redwood Shores. The rep submits your case via a deal summary that describes the customer's context, what products you are considering buying, more than 250 cruise-ship arrivals per year, what concessions he wants to give you, and why. To help reps assemble the evidence to support your case, sourcing pros should focus on maximizing the current deal's size as well as identifying future revenue opportunities. Oracle's discounting policy looks mainly at the current transaction, so bring forward and push back small purchases to aggregate them into a single PO. That may mean you start paying maintenance on some products before you're ready to implement them, so factor that into your evaluation and ensure that your discount level takes that into account. Sourcing managers should also strive to create high-level contacts between your executives and Oracle's sales and marketing leaders who are responsible for your industry. Offer to support their efforts by acting as a case study and reference customer, air force shoes, participate in their product planning process, speak at Oracle's events mdash; all of these add weight to the deal summary and help justify favorable treatment.Page 2
2. Consider Unlimited Agreements to Gain Leverage Oracle's growth trajectory drives incentives for customers to buy licenses now that they perhaps do not need for several years. For organizations that have already selected Oracle as their preferred supplier, this can provide some leverage as they enter into contract negotiations. Sourcing managers that expect to buy a lot from Oracle over the next two to three years should take a good look at its unlimited license agreement (ULA),sac guess discount, which eliminates the need to control and manage license metrics such as users and processors. ULAs are typically a win-win deal for Oracle and the customer. In addition to simplified license management, buyers can get attractive discount levels with a ULA. For example, Forrester has helped clients cut the price they pay for Oracle licensees by over 30 by placing a single purchase order for what they would otherwise have bought over a three-year period. Oracle will use these discounts to encourage customers to sign a ULA, as it has to sell more and more ULAs each quarter to make up for the revenue it can no longer get from customers that already have them. 3. Negotiate Maintenance with a License Purchase or Consider Third-Party Support Providers Standalone maintenance renewals are rarely even negotiations because Oracle holds all the cards. You can't even threaten to delay the PO because Oracle will bill you anyway, withhold support until you pay, and charge you reinstatement fees when you admit defeat. You can, however, try to avoid being in this position by securing amnesty from annual increases when you make the initial purchase. In return for a large contract, Oracle will often agree to hold maintenance costs for two to three years. In addition, while Oracle's repricing policy typically prevents you from cutting support fees on products you're not using, reps may agree to an adjustment if you scrap some licenses at the same time as you buy something else. Your total support won't go down, but it will go up less than it would have done had you not obtained the concession. For those that refuse to accept Oracle's maintenance rates, nike air force,Herzberg's motivators
bull, third-party support providers (3SPs) are still an option, for many of Oracle's applications. Most companies should stay with the software publisher's maintenance program and ensure that they are able to upgrade frequently to benefit from the stream of new functionality. However, some business units won't be able to do that, either because they have over-customized the product or simply because they are very satisfied with their current release. For sites without near-term upgrade plans, 3SPs like Rimini Street, Abtech, CedarCrestone, netCustomer, Spinnaker Support, or Versytec offer customers immediate cost savings,CIO groups, improvements in service levels, and immunity from continual price increases.
